Canister vacuums differ from uprights in that a separate unit usually houses the dust collector and motor. Many canister vacuums allow for a variety of heads to be attached resulting in ultimate flexibility. Powered heads and beater-bar tools are available for most models giving them similar performance to upright units on carpeting. These tools can either be driven by suction power or by a standalone motor.
